The New Mexico Chapter of the Air
and Waste Management Association (AWMA) will hold its February meeting in the
Banquet Room at the Golden Corral Buffet and Grill (10415 Central Avenue NE, northeast
corner at Eubank) in Albuquerque
on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at 11:30 a.m.
Kelly Isaacson, Staff Engineer,
Daniel B. Stephens & Associates, and Kacey Cubine, Student Project Lead, Engineers Without Borders
(EWB) University of New Mexico (UNM) Chapter, will present: “Save the Water, Save the People Part 2: Education without Borders - Engineers
in Bolivia.” The mission of EWB-USA is to support
community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local
partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while
creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders. EWB’s core values are integrity, service,
collaboration, ingenuity, leadership, and safety. The UNM Chapter is working
with the Tsimane people of northern Bolivia on
water supply, hygiene, and sanitation projects. In June 2011, the UNM Chapter traveled
with nine people to two communities to Bolivia, where EWB-UNM assisted
in construction of a latrine, built several water filters from local
materials, and conducted hygiene training. EWB-UNM's
partner non-government organization has reported on use of filters and hand
washing stations in these communities. This talk will present the results and
successes of EWB-UNM’s 2011 Assessment Trip,
filter design, construction and operation, project progress, including alternatives
that have been considered, and plans for the 2012 Implementation Trip. EWB’s website is http://www.unm.edu/~ewb/
if you would like any additional information. For more information about UNM’s Tsimane Health and
Life History Project, please visit: http://www.unm.edu/~tsimane/.
